Synopsis	This leaflet explains about blood tests that are carried out during the first antenatal visit. The blood tests look for possible health problems, which if left undetected could affect mother or baby. From October 2002 the tests will screen a sample of the mother's blood for the presence of HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis and rubella to determine her blood count/haemoglobin level and her blood group.
